Annona squamosa, commonly known as the sugar apple or sweetsop, is a small, deciduous or semi-evergreen tree in the custard apple family, Annonaceae. It's native to the tropical regions of the Americas but is now widely cultivated in various parts of the world for its sweet, creamy fruit. Here's more information about Annona squamosa:

1.

Appearance: Annona squamosa is a small tree or shrub, typically reaching 6 to 20 feet in height. It has a low, spreading crown and open branching structure.

2.

Leaves: The leaves of the sugar apple tree are oblong and pointed, measuring 2 to 6 inches in length. They are a glossy, pale green color and alternately arranged along the branches.

3.

Flowers: The tree produces small, fragrant flowers that are a yellow-green color. These flowers are hermaphroditic but exhibit a unique characteristic where they function first as female and then as male, which helps to prevent self-pollination.

4.

Fruits: The fruit of the sugar apple is round to conical, 2.5 to 4 inches in diameter. The skin is composed of thick, knobby segments that give it a somewhat bumpy appearance. The fruit pulp is sweet, white to light yellow, and custard-like, containing numerous dark seeds.

5.

Cultivation: Sugar apple trees prefer tropical climates and do not tolerate cold well. They prefer well-drained, sandy or loamy soil, and full sun exposure. They are drought-tolerant but produce better fruit with regular watering.

6.

Use: The primary use of Annona squamosa is for its fruit, which is eaten fresh or used in beverages, desserts, and other dishes.

7.

Climate: The sugar apple tree grows in tropical and subtropical climates and is sensitive to frost. It's suited for USDA hardiness zones 10-11.

8.

Maintenance: The tree may require regular pruning to maintain its shape and to remove any dead or diseased wood. In terms of pests and diseases, it can be susceptible to scale insects, mealybugs, and various fungal infections.
