Why You'll Love Wild Sunshine

Bring radiant color and ecological power to your landscape with Wild Sunshine™, our true native ecotype of Golden Alexander (Zizia aurea). With vibrant yellow flower clusters blooming in late spring, this perennial wildflower is a pollinator magnet, attracting native bees, butterflies, and even supporting the larvae of the Black Swallowtail butterfly.

Naturally adapted to thrive across the Eastern and Central U.S., Wild Sunshine™ grows best in moist to medium soils and full sun to partial shade. Its height ranges from 1.5 to 3 feet, making it perfect for meadows, garden borders, and native restoration projects.

Planting Instructions:

Best time to plant: Spring or fall (can be dormant-seeded in late fall)

Cold stratification: Recommended – mix seed with moist sand and refrigerate for 30–60 days before planting if planting outside the fall window

Sowing depth: Surface sow or lightly press into soil – do not bury deeply

Spacing: Scatter or sow 12–18 inches apart

Watering: Keep moist during germination; once established, moderately drought-tolerant

Native Range:

Wild Sunshine™ is native to much of the Eastern and Central United States, from the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast, thriving in zones 3–8. This ecotype is selected and sourced responsibly for optimal regional performance.

Planting Instructions

Bare soil vs. overseeding matters — but both are possible.

All Earthwise seed mixes can be planted into prepared bare soil or overseeded into an existing lawn. The right approach depends on your starting point, timeline, and goals.

Bare soil planting offers the fastest, most uniform establishment
Overseeding allows your lawn to transition naturally over time, working with your existing grass and soil ecosystem
Identifying whether you’re starting fresh or enhancing what’s already growing will help you get the best results.
