Red Russian Kale is an heirloom variety with purple stems and flat, slightly frilly green leaves. It has a tender texture and a mild, sweet flavor, making it ideal for fresh salads, steaming, or adding to soups and stews. Leaves become sweeter after frost, and it is well-suited for fall and winter gardening. The plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and well-draining soil, grows up to 18-24 inches tall, and can be harvested continuously for fresh leaves throughout the growing season. This biennial heirloom also adds ornamental value to vegetable gardens.
This rare kale features red-purple veins on slate-green, wavy-margined leaves, and cool weather intensifies its color. It tolerates cold and heat and reaches 50-65 days to maturity, with height at maturity listed as 24-28 inches. It prefers soil temperatures of 45-95°F, planting depth of 1/4–1/2 inch, and germinates in 5–18 days. After thinning, space plants about 16 inches apart. Approx seeds per pack: 250. My new babay arrived safely and only lost two little leaves so far. The first one I ordered from different shop arrived with two leaves attached that fell off within ten minutes of unboxing and 22 leaves that had came off during shipping.
