Pigeon Plum Tree (Coccoloba diversifolia) is a Florida native evergreen shade tree in the seagrape family. It tolerates salt spray and drought, making it well suited to coastal landscapes. Found along Florida’s coasts and throughout the Caribbean, it features smooth gray bark, glossy green foliage, and clusters of small purple-black fruits. The berries are edible—sweet-tart with a hint of astringency—and can be eaten fresh, made into jams, or fermented into wine. Birds, including pigeons, commonly feed on the fruit, supporting wildlife gardens, food forests, and coastal restoration plantings.
Growing Pigeon Plum favors sunny to partly shaded sites and sandy, rocky, or limestone soils with good drainage. It is naturally salt-tolerant and, once established, requires little supplemental water. The tree is evergreen, offers shade, and develops a rounded canopy with maturity. Hardy in USDA Zones 9b–11 and slow to moderate in growth, it is long-lived and resilient, suitable for coastal restoration, wildlife habitat, and food-forest plantings. It also attracts pollinators and provides edible fruit for people and birds.
