Wild Lettuce plant Lactuca virosa, also known as Opium Lettuce, is a biennial herb in the Asteraceae family native to parts of Europe, North Africa, and Asia. It can reach up to 6 feet tall under optimal conditions, with a central stem that is thick, fibrous, and often reddish-purple. When stems or leaves are cut, it exudes a milky latex containing lactucin and lactucopicrin, compounds linked to sedative and analgesic properties.
In herbal medicine, extracts from Lactuca virosa have been used to treat insomnia, anxiety, and pain. Some cultures report psychoactive effects, though potency and safety vary. The plant bears long green leaves with toothed or wavy edges and a waxy feel; lower leaves drop as it grows. Yellow flowers resemble dandelions and bloom on branching stems from late spring to early fall. It grows in well-drained soil with full sun to partial shade, commonly in waste areas, along roadsides, and in fields. Not closely related to garden lettuces, it shares visual similarities.

My new babay arrived safely and only lost two little leaves so far. The first one I ordered from different shop arrived with two leaves attached that fell off within ten minutes of unboxing and 22 leaves that had came off during shipping.
