Venus flytrap Red Periscope (Dionaea muscipula) is a live carnivorous plant. Its nectar-laden inner walls attract insects, and the trap closes when central trichomes are triggered—usually after one trichome is touched repeatedly or two spikes are tapped within seconds. The interlocking cilia along the edges help prevent escape, and prey is digested by enzymes over up to ten days. It ships young, about 1–2" across in a 2.5" pot, similar to the pictured plant, and it experiences winter dormancy Oct–Feb/Mar.
Care essentials include bright light (full to partial sun) and a peat-based potting medium (peat & perlite or pure peat). Water via the tray method and maintain 50–85% humidity; keep temperatures around 65–80°F in spring and summer and 35–55°F in colder months. Feed with fish food or bugs every 3–4 weeks. Mature size depends on care; care instructions are provided.
