Bulbs measure about 4-6 inches long and 1.5-2 inches in diameter, with a red to burgundy outer skin and a white interior marked by red rings. The flavor is mild and sweet, making it a good choice for eating raw in salads or salsas.
This long-day onion needs around 14-16 hours of daylight to form bulbs and is typically planted in spring for a summer harvest. The plants are hardy and easy to grow, requiring full sun and well-drained soil, with regular watering to avoid rot from waterlogged soil. My new babay arrived safely and only lost two little leaves so far. The first one I ordered from different shop arrived with two leaves attached that fell off within ten minutes of unboxing and 22 leaves that had came off during shipping.
