Mexican Hat 100 Seeds Drought Tolerant Coneflower
Mexican Hat, or upright prairie coneflower, is Ratibida columnifera—a perennial flowering plant in the Asteraceae family. This mahogany-red form grows in virtually any well-drained soil and prefers full sun. It is very drought tolerant, though regular watering during very dry periods will produce better flowers. It can be grown from seed, but flowering may not occur until the second year. As a naturalizing wildflower, it attracts bees and butterflies and blooms from mid-summer into fall.
To grow from seed, sow in soil in early spring to early summer. Plant seeds at a depth of 1/8 inch with a spacing of 12–18 inches. Germination typically occurs in 10–20 days. For best results, provide at least 6 hours of full sun; regular watering during very dry periods will produce better flowers.
