This open-pollinated gourd variety is also known as Vegetable Sponge and Dishcloth Gourd because the skin can be peeled after curing to reveal a usable sponge. It features vigorous, rapidly growing vines and offers a first harvest around 60 days. Recent research indicates North American gourds are nearly as old as those from Asia, suggesting early settlers brought gourds to the New World.

Sowing and growing guidance includes starting seeds indoors in peat pots before the last frost, planting two seeds per pot and clipping the weaker seedling, and hardening the plants before transplanting. After the last frost or when soil averages 65°F, transplant seedlings 8–10' apart in rows 10–12' apart, or plant in hills of two, 8–10' apart. For direct sow, plant seeds when soil is at least 70°F, 1/2 inch deep, 3–4' apart, and thin to 8–10' apart. Keep the soil consistently moist, avoid wetting the leaves to prevent disease, and use mulch to conserve moisture and keep the gourds clean. Vines tend to produce abundantly throughout the summer.
