Horizontal Freeze Free Watering Nipples Save More upgrade a traditional chicken waterer with a mess-free solution. Screw these nipples into containers you choose, such as a 5-gallon plastic bucket or PVC pipe. They don’t drip like vertical nipples, and no water is stored in the nipple unit, so they won’t freeze during winter provided you heat your water supply. They’re made from high-density plastic and were originally created for weasel farms; our supplier has used them in her flock for six years with no failures. They’re not suitable for chicks in their first week.
These nipples work with all-in-one drinker units that accept a de-icer to prevent freezing, and you can use DIY Tee's to build a watering system. Place the waterer on the ground or hang it, depending on coop layout. Training chickens: tap the nipple to fill the reservoir, then watch them peck the stainless pin to release more water; it may take a day or more. Remove all other water sources during training. Installation uses an 11/32\" drill bit and holes at least six inches apart; screw nipples in only 80% of the way; the flange does not need to be flush.
