Florida Native Sweet Basil, Ocimum campechianum, is a fragrant annual herb native to South Florida, the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central and South America. Its aromatic leaves carry a scent similar to traditional sweet basil, and its delicate purple flowers attract a variety of pollinators. In Florida, the plant thrives in the southern counties, but it is listed as endangered due to habitat loss. The species also holds cultural significance: in the Yucatán Peninsula it’s known as xkakaltun and is considered a honey plant, while in Brazil's Amazon region the leaves are eaten for flavor and used in traditional medicine.
Growing it is straightforward: it prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade, and grows best in well-drained soils with moderate watering (allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings). Space plants 12–18 inches apart to ensure good airflow. Regular pruning encourages bushier growth and longer blooming, while the leaves provide a culinary option with minty, anise-like notes and a unique herbal aroma that supports local ecosystems and pollinators.

My new babay arrived safely and only lost two little leaves so far. The first one I ordered from different shop arrived with two leaves attached that fell off within ten minutes of unboxing and 22 leaves that had came off during shipping.
