Dalotia coriaria, the rove beetle, is a fast-acting soil predator for fungus gnats, shore flies, and thrips pupae. It hunts fungus gnat larvae and moves quickly through the top layers of moist substrate, often underground and out of sight. This beetle thrives in peat, coco, leaf litter, and worm castings—basically any moisture-rich organic matter. It lives in the top 1–2 inches of moist soil, mulch, or substrate and begins hunting immediately on arrival, with a lifespan of about 3–4 weeks and eggs reaching adulthood in under 3 weeks. It is mostly nocturnal.

Use it as both a treatment and prevention: preventative applications use 1 beetle per sq ft every 4–6 weeks, while active infestations call for 1–5 beetles per sq ft depending on severity. Apply directly to the substrate—no burying or prep needed—and distribute across beds, pots, or propagation trays. It can be combined with nematodes or soil mites, and it complements foliar predators like Swirskii and Andersoni (though it does not hunt adult thrips). Dalotia starts hunting immediately on arrival and, if conditions are right, will reproduce and persist. You may not see them often, but you’ll know they’re there.
