Symphytum uplandicum, commonly known as comfrey, is a perennial herb native to Europe and part of the Forget-Me-Not family. It features hairy leaves, blue-violet bell-shaped flowers, and a large black turnip-like root that is often used medicinally. The plant is fast-growing and prefers nitrogen-rich soil.
Mature plants can be harvested multiple times a year. Be advised the plant has fine hairs on the stem that can irritate skin, so wear gloves when handling live plants. Comfrey is a productive fertilizer crop: its deep roots pull nutrients from the soil, and at season’s end you can grind unused plant material, including the root, and mix it back into soil.
