Yellow Cacao Trees are a 20-30 foot evergreen understory tree native to central and northern South America. Flowers bloom on the trunk or older branches from January to June; 3-10% become fruit. Leaves are lance-shaped and up to 24 inches long. Pods are thick-skinned and yellow, up to 12 inches long, ovoid with longitudinal ridges, containing about 60 beans with white or pinkish pulp. The white beans are the source of chocolate, cocoa powder, cocoa butter, and chocolate liquor.
Cacao belongs to Malvaceae; Theobroma means 'food of the gods' in Greek. They grow best in dappled shade with rich, well-draining soil and flower only above 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Cross-pollination requires at least two trees. Water regularly and fertilize every 3-4 weeks. Hardiness is USDA zones 9-11 with frost protection. Historically, Mayans, Aztecs, and Toltecs cultivated cacao and used the beans as currency; Europeans later popularized chocolate.

My new babay arrived safely and only lost two little leaves so far. The first one I ordered from different shop arrived with two leaves attached that fell off within ten minutes of unboxing and 22 leaves that had came off during shipping.
