Bignay Tree for Juices and Jams and Snacking

Bignay Tree for Juices and Jams and Snacking is a tropical fruit tree native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands in the Phyllanthaceae family. It grows as a large, spreading tree with a wide canopy, typically reaching 20–40 feet in height, and features glossy dark green foliage that enhances tropical gardens. It thrives in warm, humid climates, delivering ornamental value, shade, and the option to use it as a landscaping centerpiece. The tree bears clusters of small berries that ripen from red to deep purple or black and are commonly used in juices, jams, and wines.

Flavor-wise, the berries are sweet-tart and often used in juices, jams, wines, and jellies; the fruit is described as cranberry-like. In addition to culinary uses, Bignay is noted for its resilience in tropical settings and its traditional medicinal associations. The fruit is believed to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and to support cardiovascular health, aid digestion, and detoxification; leaves are used in some regions to make medicinal teas. Legend has it that David Fairchild brought the first Bignay seedling to Florida from Southeast Asia.
