In the dry season it grows as emersed creeping stems and can produce pinkish flowers at the leaf nodes; when floodwaters rise in the wet season it becomes submerged and grows in its familiar aquatic form. This versatile stem plant is popular in the hobby for its ease of growth and distinctive foliage.
In the aquarium, plant stems deep into the substrate, and it can also be used as a floater. The plant is easy to keep, does not require CO2, and tolerates lighting from low to high. It grows at a moderate to fast rate and is propagated by cutting stems and replanting.
