Autumn Giant leek is a mid-late variety with a growing period of 135 to 150 days. It forms long, flat green leaves and thick stems with a tiny onion. The plant grows 20 to 25 inches tall, and its stem diameter measures 2 to 3 inches. One plant weighs about 10 to 12 ounces.
Used fresh, canned, or dried, Autumn Giant leek includes sowing and transplanting steps. Start indoors in late winter for the earliest varieties, sowing about an inch apart in pots or trays (two seeds per cell in plug trays). Cover with a thin layer of sieved soil, water, and keep moist. Place on a sunny windowsill or in a greenhouse. Transplant when they reach 6 to 8 inches tall and harden off over one to two weeks. To plant in soil, dib holes to the height of the stems, remove seedlings from pots, place them, water to drain, and do not back-fill, or the stems will blanch. Water during very dry weather.
