The Ackee tree is a tropical fruit tree native to West Africa and introduced to the Caribbean. It produces bright red fruits with a unique taste and texture, and it is a staple in Caribbean cuisine, most famously in Jamaica where it is paired with saltfish.
Fruits split open when fully ripe to reveal three large, shiny black seeds surrounded by creamy, fleshy arils; only the arils are edible and they must be properly prepared to avoid toxicity. The fruit is mild in flavor with a rich, buttery texture when cooked, making it well suited for savory dishes. Leaves are glossy, dark green, and pinnate; the tree grows as a medium-sized evergreen up to 30–40 feet tall with a wide canopy. Ackee is Jamaica’s national fruit and is central to the iconic dish Ackee and Saltfish, where the arils are boiled and sautéed with onions, peppers, and salted cod. It is rich in fatty acids such as oleic and palmitic acids, plus protein and vitamins. My new babay arrived safely and only lost two little leaves so far. The first one I ordered from different shop arrived with two leaves attached that fell off within ten minutes of unboxing and 22 leaves that had came off during shipping. So glad she arrived looking as beautiful as i was hoping. Also had a surprise red arrow syngonium cutting that’s beautiful. Also customer service was amazing. Will definitely order from them again.
