The Achacha tree, Garcinia humilis, is native to South American countries like Bolivia, Peru, and Brazil, where locals call it Achachairú. Indigenous communities began cultivating it in the tropical lowlands of the Amazon Basin. In Australia, the name was shortened to Achacha for marketing, and the crop has recently been approved for commercial growth, boosting its presence on the world fruit platter. The tree prefers medium-altitude rainforest climates—shady, humid conditions with well-porous soil. It grows slowly but can reach about 10–15 ft tall.

The bright orange, egg-shaped fruits are said to be closest in flavor to mangosteen, with about half the sugar. They are encased in a rind that stays fresh for 4–6 weeks at room temperature after harvest. Rinds are rich in antioxidants and can be infused into a sweet, tangy drink when chilled. The plant is noted as a good candidate for rainforest restoration in parts of South America affected by deforestation and burning. Our medium-size Achacha trees are grown from seed and typically fruit within 6 years; large-size plants also grown from seed and can fruit within 5 years.
