Meet the Meyer Lemon Tree (Citrus × meyeri), a compact evergreen citrus native to China. Introduced to the US through Frank Meyer, this variety is prized for its sweet, juicy flavor and thin, fragrant skin. It’s thought to be a hybrid between a regular lemon and a mandarin orange, giving a unique sweetness and floral aroma.

This tree features glossy, dark green evergreen leaves that release a sweet citrus scent when crushed. It typically grows 6-10 feet tall, making it suitable for containers or small gardens. Meyer Lemons are highly productive, often yielding fruit multiple times a year, especially in warm climates. The medium-sized fruits have smooth, thin skin that turns from deep yellow to orange as they ripen; flesh is juicy, less acidic, with a sweet-tangy flavor and hints of mandarin. They are versatile for baking, cooking, fresh lemonade, cocktails, marmalades, lemon curd, and candied zest. While lemons are generally cold sensitive, the Meyer variety shows higher cold hardiness than most lemons thanks to its mandarin heritage.
